Keep in mind also that the Mini VII has volumetric dosing.
I don't leave ground coffee in the grinder doser. Any left over coffee is less than a gram. I appreciate your comment, but I am having a hard time understanding the theory behind it.
Further, I get the same result even if I do 2 shots, wait an hour, and do 2 more. Hard to believe less than a gram of coffee would make that much difference in that short of time period.
My previous machine was a Silvia, and I never experienced this issue, and I am not grinding any differently.
Did you have the same grinder with the Silvia? I find it hard to believe your M Mini holds only 1gram back. i have to agree with Jman here. The only other thing is your Espro tamper, then again, if it's ALWAYS the same scenario, then the stale grind muyst be the thing. Why not go with the flow here, and before your first shot in the AM, grind for 2 seconds, and toss that grind into your compost. Then proceed.

One more fact comes to mind. The first shot has better creama and better flavor than the second. If stale coffee in the first shot is the difference, I need to figure out how to get some stale coffee into the second shot!

As a MiniV user I can say that I have not had that strange problem, but I'm using a vario. And your first shot is better? My first shot is usually the shot that I use to make any adjustments to improve the next ones. Strange issue?
Is this a Mazzer mini problem?? or a pressure and/or temp stability problem on the unit?

Well, I am going to go out on a limb and say it's a Mazzer Mini thing, as I've not seen (as far as I remember) this exact issue on CG since the inception of the vII version of the La Spaz mini.

Sorry, Didn't mean to touch off a nerve, but in reality the specs of the Mazzer mini have been surpassed by other grinders, including Macap, Compak, and the Vario series, as regards consistency and a somewhat less clumpy grind. In the case of the vario, barely any clumping. BTW, "thing" meant "issue", in your case. BTW, how old are your burrs? Was the grinder new? If not, did you purchase new burrs (a must when buying a used Mazzer.) We are only trying to help, so perhaps a little less attitude would be nice. We've all resisted the usual comment which would be "perhaps it's your technique."
Maybe post a video of your grinding, packing the basket and pulling the shot? Are you using a bottomless PF so you can observe the pour?
