thought about that deal, but when i checked the shipping was $16, which pushed it to $255. you can get brand new for $299 free shipping, so its such a small decrease. i wish they provided free shipping on their refurbs.
you can get used preciso for about $200 shipped on ebay if you are patient. i think baratza will still service if you arent original owner

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the best plan is to stalk Craigslist, Coffeegeek BST and the local thrift stores for a quality espresso maker on the cheap (Gaggia Classic?).
This is the wrong forum, but I was surprised at the response to Alterra coffee. Is my freshly roasted/ground Alterra and Chemex really that bad? Maybe I will put the $400 towards the Preciso and some mail order coffee for now. :) I do enjoy the "clean" cup from the Chemex (not a French Press person I guess).

Why are you only budgeting $400? If it's an hour each way, that's 4-person hours per latte. It seems like it wouldn't take very many saved trips to justify spending two or three times that amount.
We won't do the drive just to get lattes; we will wait until we are in the area which is maybe once every 4-6 weeks. But on a lazy Saturday morning I usually crave a good latte.
I have never tried Alterra, so I can't comment on it. If the beans are good quality and properly roasted, I would imagine you could make very good coffee with that method...especially if you have a good grinder (which you're working on). Of course, that's not a latte, so until you can get a decent grinder and machine, you won't have lattes unless you drive an hour.
