I actually have never used a spouted portafilter so I have no idea what the spouts have to offer. I find that the naked just makes sense. It's cleaner, works better on the tamping mat and yes... I find it sexy and that does play. I've encountered no spritzing or other problems. But that is all just functional stuff.
This thread has gotten me curious to try the spouts to see the effect on flavour and texture. Has anyone ever done a blind taste test analysis?

At home, my first shot of the day -- a straight, double ristretto -- is always pulled using a bottomless pf. It's a tool, and lets me make any adjustments if necessary, etc., etc. The rest of the day, I'm pulling shots using a "regular" (spouted) portafilter.
In my office, although I have a bottomless pf, it doesn't get used all that much -- one or two shots if I have a new blend, but that's it. Otherwise it's all made with the "regular" portafilter.
I find the shots do taste differently -- bottomless v. regular -- not better or worse, just different.

I use a single spout for doubles always. It makes for easy cleanup. That along with taking the springs out of my portafilters so I can easily replace baskets really has made life simpler. One for her and one for me.
much prefer the bottomless as it keeps you on your toes. I have seen to many crappy shots coming out of a spouted portafilter, where the OP doesn't even realise how bad the shot is. I also don't think it's easy to detect a sub optimal shot in a spouted portafilter.
