The stock NS baskets are much more forgiving than the VST ones, but don't give as good quality coffee, in my opinion. What kind of tamper are you using, McL?
If you've taken the top off and you can't see anything leaking, but it's still leaking, I would check the fittings on the pump under the bottom panel. I know you said you checked this panel before but that's the only thing I can think off at the moment.

We will have lots of photos of my tear down posted in the next day or so. I know it is hard to wait but I think photos will help you. Most leaks are at the joint and so pipe sealant and tightening is in order. But since you have to open it up it is better to do a full descale while you are in there. I chose to mod it when I was at it.
