This is just a guess, but it's probably easier to change the sloped basket than one with straight sides. The machine ships with four baskets so they must think you're going to change them all the time. Since the spring in the PF is so aggressive, it's a chore to push a straight basket (like a VST) into the PF.
I actually prefer the sloped wall baskets because spent pucks knock out so very easily and cleanly with a single light tap on the knock box. It makes rapid back-to-back shot-making sooo much easier. I still have a machine with straight wall baskets and it's a huge PITA in comparison. Plus with the technical quality of the Breville basket being at least as good or better than the much-hailed VST, I get that satisfying feeling I'm working with the best quality of equipment possible. Now, you do have to dose right, but that's easily repeatable with a scale, which I would be using anyway. So to me, the tapered Breville basket is all win.

OK I admit defeat. I throw myself on the mercy of the forum, my toga in shreds. My shots are predominantly sour. I hang my head in shame.
1) I have great beans. Local roaster pulls fabulous shots on their La Maz, lovely chocolatey, aromatic yumminess. 2) I have a Barazza Vario grinder, seems to work well and reproducably. 3) I have played with grind, tamp, temp, preextraction time, dose until I am blue in the face. 4) The only thing I have noticed is that pump pressure rarely exceeds 7.5 bars, even with tightening up the grind and tamp pressure to the point of choking the machine. This is the only variable I have left to play with, I reckon, before I do away with myself.
The closest I come to a decent shot is 203 degrees, 7 seconds preinfusion, grind and tamp so tight that a 45ml shot is taking around 50 seconds total time, including preinfusion.

the pressure shouldbe 9-9.5. use a blind and read the pressure and post here the result. bubbadude or youtube can show you how to fix it at the back to increase the 7.5 to a higher pressure

First time posting
Just bought my BDB today in large part by the commentary here, it will serve as an upgrade to my Saeco Estro Vapore while being coupled with a Baratza Vistuoso, I have a Vario on order right now. The old setup is being moved to the girlfriend's house, it has served me well for multiple years and still works well enough.
Thanks for the info, it's been quite helpful.
I'm quite happy and have the espresso shakes right now!

I don't have a blind, just the rubber thingy with the hole in it that makes a squealy noise and hurts my ears and doesn't seal well enough to measure pressure. Tried to order a blind when I bought the mocheen but they were constantly backordered. I could try again.
I seem to remember somewhere on the forum a thread about making a blind using duct tape or aluminum tape or something? This forum is getting long and cumbersome to search.
