Dave you make valid points. I read overkill to mean designed for more then you will need it to do. Which is why I think overkill when talking about high end espresso machines is pointless, because while the majority of these machines are designed to be used at home, they're built at a capacity that most of us will never use fully. But that doesn't stop most of us from buying them because even if we never push the machines to their maximum capacity, we get years of enjoyment and a much less headache involved process than if we were all to buy Silvias and Rockys.
In your context, you're absolutely right, and I almost think you're point makes more sense.

Dave's point factored very big into my decision to buy the Duetto. My Oscar lasted almost 4 years, it is not down for the count but is need of a serious overhaul. In those years I learned how to make espresso and step by step how to fix different things on the Oscar and the final step is to completely take it apart, clean fix, mod, and put back together for a portable machine or to pass on to someone. I knew I wanted something to last and was planning on getting the DT1 since it is such a tank, not in stock. The Duetto 3 allowed me to save some money, get a PID duel boiler and its build gave me confidence of a long lasting machine. The end result is I am shocked how much I count on the temp control, it is really helping me work with my roasting to take that to the next step. I also entertain enough large crowds that the power the Duetto gives me when on 20 amp ( not to shabby on 15amp either) means I can work even faster.
