Hi everyone,
I am very green to the espresso making experience, and I was given my first machine and grinder for Christmas. I was given a DeLonghi EC860 and one of their grinders which is a KG79 (fixed the wrong model number) I think. I know this machine will not pull off the best espresso compared to other machines since it is a ppf and I am sure my grinder is lacking. I am just trying to dial in my process and I am mainly making lattes and what not and will be occasionally drink espresso.
I have made a few shots so far and they went ok, but I have nothing to base it off of. I started with the finest grind and I was tamping it to 30 pounds... Then I found out I do not need to tamp, or only tamp it lightly. Should I plan on dropping money on a different grinder to have any hope of dialing in the machine? Also I have found that a La Pavoni basket will fit into the machine after flattening the rim and taking out the internal plastic diverter. This will allow me to do non-pressurized shots and get into more of the skills.
I have just found very little online about this machine other than a 10 min video from Seattle Coffee Gear. Thanks for any pointers.

Ok I have tinkered with my grind a little more today and it helped a little. I am dosing to 16 grams and tamping a little and it is still a little bitter off and on. I went really coarse and it became very bland, then stepped down and it got better, until I went another step and it got bitter again.
Should I be just fill the basket and level it and not worry about weight? Like I have said I am new to all of his and have tried to read as much as I can but just don't know how I should adjust everything. I am thinking about dropping some money on the Barazta preciso to see if a grinder upgrade will make this whole process easier. It seems like the delonghi grinder is just to variable to work well with this machine.
