You did not describe your machine, experience, or your goals and usage. The machines are both fairly basic, Single Boiler Dual Use without an easy adjustment to pressure and no 3 way selonoid IIRC. It seems more of a side step than upgrade if your machine is still in decent shape. If yours has problems, and the Gaggia is cheap enough and well maintained, then perhaps.
Both machines are capable of using a pressurized basket, not recommended, or unpressurized. You may have to depressurize the Barista, I do not recall.

I'd agree, doesn't seem worth the hassle to me. If you're open to used equipment, I'd spend a little more for a machine with a commercial portafilter and a 3-way solenoid.
That being said, if you're using pre-ground right now with the Barista, you'd be better off looking for a grinder.
