anyone know how you're supposed to drain the boiler on the ns musica? from their hydraulic diagram the hot water comes out of the heat exchanger (rather than the boiler, iow) which i think is the usual method -- i don't see an obvious way to do it besides turning it upside down and draining it out the steam valve? is there a drain plug somewhere? manual isn't forthcoming to say the least. thanks!

David, welcome to CG. Personally, I'd contact NS. I believe they sell that machine at Seattle Coffee Gear? If so, give them a call. My guess is NO drain plug, as they can corrode, which would really be a problem. I would guess that IF there was a method of draining through a plug, they'd say so. Are you descaling, and have solution in there presently?
Most folks drain through the hot water tube, and through the group. I'd imagine. I'm a lever guy with a small boiler, no rerservoir. It's a great machine, and worth your time to find out what you need to know. Keep us posted.
yep. and that's what has me perplexed. doing that on this machine would only drain the heat exchanger and not the boiler (the water tube is connected to the heat exchanger as is obviously the group). so my guess is that you'd need to do it via the steam tube (which isn't computer controlled). if you disconnect the reservoir the musica's computer disables the hot water key so even if it were hooked up to the boiler you couldn't drain it that way... descaling the heat exchanger is easy, tho (in that you don't need to drain it). i'm a little afraid tho that it'll pull descaler into the boiler where simply steaming won't clear out the descaler... btw, you drain the heat exchanger by starting a manual extraction and then pulling out the reservoir (as above selecting hot water won't do it -- the computer will stop it).
clearly i'm missing something, tho, wrt to draining the boiler.. i'll, uhh, take your advice and ask around. thanks!

FWIW, the musica's guts are very similar to the Oscar, which has that thing inside to unscrew to purge the boiler.
This being said, these machines do not use much water through their boilers. Most of the water go through the group, only the water needed to make steam go through the boiler, and that's very little (remember that's 22.4 liters of steam for 18 grams of water if I remember correctly) . So you don't have to descale the boiler as often as the main circuit of the group ...

At least as an Oscar owner, I can confirm there IS a drain plug, but it's so hard to access that a lot of us just unscrew the steam tip and tilt the machine over a sink. It's a tedious pain in the a-- but sometimes it has to be done. When I first got my oscar, it desperately needed a descale. I went through four or five cycles of drain, fill, heat, drain until the steam was nice and clean. Later I looked over the shoulder of a tech who rinsed out the boiler and it looked like a shiny new penny, so the descale really did help.
