Really any machine needs the portafilter hot, whether locked in waiting or running some water through. I turn my machine on in the morning with the PF locked in untill ready to use. Even the good shop by me leaves their multigroups PFs locked in or they'll clean and run water through, dry, dose and pull. It's a dense piece of metal that can draw heat away from water fast if cold.

For a sbdu I've found the CC1 to be pretty accurate for temp and stability through a shot.
