This is a question from an old thread that I don't think was ever answered. In the picture, there are 2 valves that look like OPVs with tubes going to the reservoir. When I run the pump with no portafilter attached, the tube coming from valve 2 sputters water back into the reservoir and valve 1 does nothing. When the pump has backpressure put on it, whether from a puck or a blind basket, valve 1 returns water into the reservoir at a much more consistent rate, while valve 2 does nothing.
Apparently valve 2 isn't an OPV since it only lets water through the tube at low pressure. But what is it?
I scoured Bezzera's manual, and valve 1 appears to be a suppression valve which I think is an OPV. There is a similar-looking valve described as a check valve in the specs for the direct connect model only, but I have the tank model, and I can't find anything that looks like the second "OPV" in my model's specs.
