Okay, I know better than to believe that espresso doesn't lose a lot of its character and cohesion after it's been sitting for a while. But I'm a full-time student with three back to back classes each Monday and Wednesday. If I'm lucky, I can make it to our cafe and pay $5 for a (fairly weak) breve but I keep thinking "What if I could bring my coffee with me?" When I'm in class and my face is ready to hit the desk, I'm not picky. So I was thinking, what if I pulled a shot, put it in a little sealed container overnight and took it with me to school with 1/2&1/2 and Splenda in it. Sure it would sit for a few hours, sure it would be lukewarm and probably separated, but when it comes down to it and cold water was added from the drinking fountain, how bad do you think it would be, considering the alternatives? (Starbucks "Double Shot")
I'm going to try this, either way, I've got nothing to lose. I just am curious if I'm in for a a gag-fest by mutilating the 15-hour old shot. Thoughts?
I think I'd go with iced drip or other brewed coffee in a good thermos. At least that's designed to be served something like that. Hot brewed coffee would be my next option (maybe americano would survive in a thermos for a while if it must be espresso based?)
I read some where that espresso lost its espresso flavors after being chilled X number of hours and just tasted like cold brewed coffee. As such I second the idea of taking strong cold brewed that you add hot water to it for drinking. It would be easier than pulling a bunch of shots. But try it for yourself and report back.
Buying advice: GRINDER GRINDER GRINDER. Don't cheap out on the grinder.
60ml shot of Guatamala Antigua (with slightly stale beans) 2.5 oz Half and Half 1tsp Splenda
Left this little monstrosity in the fridge overnight in a little 8oz kids' juice bottle. Then I brought it to school with me today and added cold water right before drinking it.
Strong, a little bitter, but perfectly serviceable and I'll definitely be doing it in the future. I'd just like to find a container that's a bit more durable and less leaky. Thankfully I put it in a ziploc bag before I put it in my backpack.
