Espresso: La Nuovo Era Cuadra Grinder: Baratza Vario
Posted Mon Aug 27, 2012, 6:28am Subject: Re: Rancilio Silvia vs. La nuova era agata
You could save everybody a lot of time by just posting what grinder you have or are getting with the espresso machine. Then we can all jump in to tell you your grinder isn't good enough.
The fact that you didn't post any grinder information tells me that you haven't spent much time reading through the archives here. I'll give you a quick summary though: Expect to spend $300 on a grinder. If money is tight, buy used.
The Silvia is well regarded here and it's shortcomings are well understood. It's a very capable machine but not easy to be consistent with. Adding a PID helps, but then you are getting close to heat exchanger (or Breville Double Boiler) machine prices. It's probably a better route to go for something like a Crossland CC1, a LeLit, or an Ascaso. All can be had for less than $700.
If you want something in the Silvia range, I would also consider a Gaggia Classic. There's a great community of enthusiasts around this machine as well and I think it's a better value than the Silvia. FWIW, I'm a relative newbie here, so you might want to wait for some more opinions.
