The rather uninformative one page document I got explaining the PID was really of no help in this area.
After I pull a shot, I'd like to run some water through the grouphead for cleaning, but the only way I can get water to come out of there is to either start the brew cycle via the PID, which seems wrong for this, since it does a short preinfusion burst, and then you have to wait for a bit before it starts pumping water again...
OR, I can switch the coffee switch on, and also turn the water switch on (with the steam wand valve closed), which seems to do the trick. Is this ok?
Can I do the same for backflushing? Install the backflush disk, turn on the coffee switch, and then turn on the water switch until it builds up pressure, and then turn it back off? Backflushing using the PID brew cycle here definitely seems like the wrong way to go about it.

There are several choices of PID units from Auber. It sounds like yours has a pre infusion option. Regardless of pre infusion, all you are doing is building pressure and letting it out the 3 way valve. If that goes through the pre infusion, it isn't a big deal either way.
You should have a switch on the front of the espresso machine for brewing, this switch turns the pump on and pushes water out of the brew group, I would use that switch but it is hard to know exactly how your machine is set up without more information about it.
The stock Sylvia has a power switch to turn it on and off, a brew switch to start the brew cycle, a steam/brew switch to set temp between brewing and steaming and a pump switch to let you get hot water out of the steam wand and to fill the boiler after steaming or brewing a shot.

There is a brew button, but it does not turn on the pump. It does have to be on in order for the "play" button on the PID to work, but being on by itself does nothing.
The second button, the "water" button, does turn on the pump. If the "brew" button is on at the same time as the water button, water will come out of the group. If the wand valve is open, water comes out of the wand. If both the brew button and the wand valve are on, water comes out of both.
I just want to make sure it's not going to break anything if I have the brew button in the "on" position, and I use the water button to get water through the group. I wonder if I'd even be able to pull a shot manually this way.

Finally a question I can answer. I have been on this site forever and never been able to answer anything.
From page one of the Operation Manual that came with my PID it states: There are two ways to pull the shot manually. 1) Keep the Brew Switch at the on position. Turn on the Hot Water switch to start the brew pump. Turn off the Hot Water switch to stop the pump. 2) Keep the Brew Switch at the on position. Set the timer to a longer time than you normally need for the shot. Press the “>” button on the controller to start brew pump. Press the “>” again to stop the pump.
So you wont hurt anything doing what you are doing. I have done it and it is made to work that way according to the Auber Docs.
Awesome, thank you! I bought this machine with the PID already installed, and while it had a short instruction sheet saying how to modify the SV and etc, it didn't have any of these instructions.
