I currently have an 18g vst basket and a curved 58mm tamper, however it is not as snug as I would like, and also I'd like to just get a flat base. Which exact size tamper do I need? Thinking about ordering a reg barber what do you guys think?

i just picked up one of the 58.35 tampers from http://www.coffeecomplements.com/products-page/

it's cheaper than others ive seen.

unfortunately i dont have any VST baskets but i can say that the tamper fits the espressoparts HQ baskets pretty well.

The previous posters are correct, 58.35mm is the recommended size.

You cannot go wrong with a Reg tamper, they are the industry standard. Of course, there are other tampers available, cheaper ones and more expensive ones.

For home use, ergonomics is a minor factor. Instead, the choice really depends on economics and "ego-nomics."  :)

There's an ebay vendor (US ebay) that offers custom sizes. "precision tamper maker" or something very close to that. I love mine. Do you have calipers to make a precise basket measurement? If so you might find something better or at least similar for less money.

Just another option.

another thought on the Reg Barber is you can get aluminum, stainless, brass or copper.

I haven't used brass, but I can really feel the difference in weight between the stainless and copper (much, much heavier).

The eBay seller TB is referring to is Knock:  http://www.madebyknock.com

I have one which replaced my Rattleware tamper and like it a lot more.  The tighter tolerance helps me tamp straighter and the height of the base is designed to be level with the basket when dosed according to VST spec which assists in visually confirming up or down doses.  Highly recommended if you are looking for a cheaper VST tamper option.

yeh their down here in West Palm, you can't beat them for the money. Their specs are right on the spot and quality/fit is right there with tampers costing way way more ;) . They'll even custom make one to whatever spec you want if it's not listed.

Hey guys thanks for the replies, I just went ahead and ordered a 58.3mm reg barber as that seems like the closest to the recommended 58.35 from the Pullman tampers. I thought the reg's were pricey so the Pullmans are way too much! I checked out the made by knock website and they looked pretty good but I thought I'd spend a little extra and go with a bit of style from the reg instead. Should come in the next few days, so will give you my thoughts

I picked up a VST 18g ridgeless basket and at the same time I got the Cafelat Royal tamper which is 58.35 mm and has a flat base. Got them both at Chris Coffee. The tamper also comes with the rubber tamper base, it has a nice feel and works great.
