I have an X3, so I don't know how much help this will be.
The Francis-Francis models do continually drip, and make a dry puck an impossibility. That doesn't affect the quality of the espresso. I'm VERY pleased with that.
The gurgling sound? Maybe that's just a feature. How does the espresso taste?

When Francis Francis came to the market it did on the cheap way, with aluminum boiler and no three way solenoid, that's reason for continuous dripping; later production saw a brass boiler and threeway solenoid while I am not sure about OPV

Having no threeway it is normal that top of puck should be watery after brew while if the brew has happened grinds cannot be dry because water has been through supposedly at 9+ bar, about bitter taste you better perfect grinding ?? and your mano, because machine is perfectly capable, as most machines, to brew good espresso

there is no dripping not sure how that got in there but there is, i think something very wrong. there are two siphon hoses in the reservoir a long hose and a short one the long hose is the intake and the short is some kind of pressure release valve. well there is a lot of discharge pressure coming out from that short hose and it has a slight discolor to it.

What model X1 do you have? Earlier ones utilized both grounds or pods, having a dedicated portafilter for each. Later models were only either grounds or pods. If your silicone water intake hose has a filter valve on the end, give it a good cleaning or even take it off and see if the "gurgling" stops. Take care!

i have the model 1 with little girl on the pressure gauge. there is no filter on the intake line and there are two handles. one has interchangeable filters for one and two cups the other handle looks like it's used for pods

I'd start with cleaning the group head screen and valve inside. My older version X1 used to get pretty crusty. Also, run some de-scaler through. Might be good idea to pop the lid and take a peak inside to check for any signs of leakage. Take care!
