I'm buying a DB machine towards the end of June and have settled on the Alex Duetto II but I wanted to see what the R58 looked like when it came out.  After watching the WLL video, I'll am going with the Alex, this is why.

  • - I don't prefer the remote PID control, it looks cheesy.
  • - Celsius only.
  • - The PID only tells the boiler temp and isn't programed to calculate the head temp offset, you have to look in the manual.
  • - The internal fit and finish of the Alex looks to be better.

From the outside, its a beautiful machine but (from watching the WLL video very closely) the internals are not a clean as the Alex.  It also looks like the base plate and internal frame is painted / power coated steel, not full stainless like the Alex.

Hi everybody

Thank you for the interest you have all shown in our new R 58 machine.
There have been a lot of comments made about the machine and I wanted to give you all our views and considerations that went into building this machine.

The PID;
The PID was designed to be remote simply so we could maintain the contemporary design that we strive for in all our machines. We decided that we did not wish to ruin the aesthetics of the R 58 with a digital display. Totally our personal opinion as to how an espresso machine should look!
The ability to set the extraction temperature for a specific coffee maybe important for many of the potential buyers of this machine, but once that temperature has been set it is unlikely that you will need to make daily adjustments to the extraction temperature. Likewise the option between tank and direct water connection is hardly something that will need to be changed once set.
For the moment we have a Celsius reading only, this could well change. Once the temperature has been set, is it really important whether that reading is in C or F?

Boiler verses Group temperature display;
We choose to show the brew boiler temperature and not convert this reading to a group temperature which is the method chosen by many manufacturers. Simply our testing showed that many dual boiler machines in the market did not have great thermal stability. Therefore a swing of up to 12 degrees in the boiler was converted to show a constant reading at the group, which was in fact not correct and misleading.
By showing the boiler temperature the user has a first hand indication of the stability of our machine, something we strive to achieve in all our designs as we consider this the single most important factor. Then using the brilliant SCASE meter, arguably the most accurate measurement tool for group temperature, we convert the real boiler temperature measurement to the real group temperature measurement via a table. Example we know the boiler temperature is (X) and know via SCASE the group temperature is (Y). No tricks, your own SCASE meter would show the same results.
This in our opinion gives the user honest accurate information not a 'formulated' or manipulated reading to achieve what the manufacturer would like people to see!

There are a great number of very fine espresso machines in the market place and our machines will not suit ever-bodies tastes or requirements. We do believe in what we do, stand behind our machines as we are immensely proud of the Rocket Espresso brand.

I received the R58. About the discussion of the PID, I do like the way the PID looks on the side of the machine, it looks so good that so far I've decided to keep it connected all the time, I have it setup next to my on/off timer switch. The machine is gorgeous! Will post a review after more use. So far I need to upgrade my grinder to truly give it some work for the money. I Posted on the grinder forum for suggestions.

I can't vouch for the machine, but I will say that what Andrew says about the design features makes sense to me.  I have a Mini Vivaldi.  The temperature settings are in celsius.  I grew up with fahrenheit temps and I'm now 67 years old.  But, I can learn a few new tricks.  After all, I've learned much about coffee that I didn't know just a few short years ago.  When I got my machine I looked up the temp conversions, wrote them on a card and I keep the card in the cupboard over my machine.  The truth is though that I almost never change my temp setting.  Once in a while, I'll taste a harsh shot and play with the temp settings, but I usually end up back at 93 degrees.  That would be 199.4 for you fahrenheit - o- philes. As for the off-set temp., mine was preset by Chris and I assume it reads accurately.  What I know is that it repeats exactly the profile I want.  I do not want to check it each time.  Repeatability of the profile is what counts to me.  I have adopted that same thinking when roasting.  I roast with an RK drum.  I have no way of checking the temp of the beans.  But, I monitor the temp inside the grill; I watch the time; I listen and monitor smoke and smell.  With these inputs I get repeatability of results and that's what counts.

Great link, thank you iroast. It seems perhaps the Rocket R58 German forum (albeit google translation challenged) might have some steaming issue?

That's my understanding. Something about not the right pressure, but generally, the R58 is well received. What worries me is the one post about a bad plastic smell from the tank. Non-issue if you're planning to plumb it in. There are a few other issues with the R58, so I encourage anyone interested in buying the R58 to read the thread carefully and then decide. I ordered mine from eBay 1st wk of June. Expecting a 2nd wk of July delivery.
