I finally got my dimmer installed last night. Used a long thin type intended for the halogen torchiere lamps. I drilled a hole through the side of the lower unit of my machine, mounted this thing inside with only the knob sticking out, and that knob is right next to my pressure gage. It is of course a knob sticking out the side of the machine but it looks about as integrated as I can expect. I soldered and shrink wrapped my connections and used spade terminals. I should have taken a picture or two of it going in.
I gave it a single run this morning and it was interesting, I'll definitely have to play with it. With the dimmer all the way up I peg my gage at about 135 - 140psi where the OPV is set, so I'm getting full power or at least enough that direction. At the other end the pump just humms and the water barely flows, and I seem to have good adjustability anywhere in between.
I pulled a shot over maybe 45 seconds at a pressure that I think hovered around 4 bar but I was doing a few things at once and didn't get to really monitor it. Got my normal 2 oz before it blonded and it also tasted about like it usually does. I've been trying out an Aeropress recently so my comparison basis is a little off.
Hopefully this weekend I can try a few shots back to back, normal vs. slow flowed and see how they compare. I'm interested in varying the pressure at the beginning and end - is it good to start high and go low, vice-versa, who knows? Looking forward to it.
Better looking and may be fix under the machine for a cleaner look.
Love this thread. I've been thinking about this when I saw the slayer clip on youtube. The 3 parts with Seattlecoffeegeer. I never imagine a mod could be so easy.

I have a brand new R58 and don't want to put hole in it. Not even sure if my pump model work with a dimmer. I read a few thread on the subject and saw mention of diode that could make the mod make the motor behave heratically. My R58 has a rotary pump.
