I will only speak to my knowledge, but the Silvia V3 is a great machine. Does your dad need other equipment as well? You need a good grinder to go with the Silvia (or any other espresso machine). Whole Latte Love has a great package of Silvia, Preciso grinder, frothing pitcher, thermometer for frothing milk (ask for it to be added), shot glass, cleaning brush, descaler in your $800 price range. It actually (removing prices for the other items) gets the Silvia below $450 net price. So it depends on what your dad needs. That is the package I bought - it works great!
Oops- just saw you are in Montreal. I am not sure if you have similar buying options there!

I could not find much on the Isomac Maverik in reviews so I googled it and found this thread. The thread said it did not have a 3 way value. I believe I would want a 3 way.
A good grinder is very very important. Depending on what equipment he already has you might be better off getting him a grinder.

I have often used this reply for these questions (gift or not): What is the priority? Does it have to be espresso? How does he currently drink his coffee? Does he have any equipment now? If espresso is not a priority and great coffee is, this is my advice: 1 - get a good (or great) grinder. One of the upper-end Baratza offerings such as the Vario would serve nicely. Very nicely. It is small and is more than capable of serving the needs of an espresso machine. 2 - a group of your countrymen make the Espro Press. It makes a great, rich, satisfying cup(s) of coffee. They also just came out with a larger model.
I agree. Particularly since it has the vac breaker installed. Great starter setup if used is OK. If memory serves, I believe that the price is around what the grinder sells for alone, new.
