Breville, not a brand really love here. But they do have appealing products. I owned a Cafe Roma that cost me 80$ (was in red plastic) that i sold, and now using another Cafe Roma in stainless (the girlfriend machine). I am looking for a new espresso machine since i will be without one in a near future. Lately the Cafe Roma is showing his age (been used quit a lot).

What do i know about espresso? Not much if i compare myself to others on this site. I did roast my beans in the past with a Freshroast and a Caffe Rosto. Not anymore. I also have a Baratza Virtuoso grinder but lately i have been buying those bricks of sealed coffee, grinded for espresso (or that what it says).

Sometime, i did espresso with a GSI camping espresso maker and it does a pretty good job.

My point on saying all that is that, from my experience, whatever the equipment you use, the quality of the espresso you try to produce vary a lot. Sure i haven't tried well known espresso machine but i can not afford to spend a 1000$ or more on one. And i am skeptic about the difference you get in the taste of the shots with the price difference. But again, what do i know.....

So my choice these days are the Breville BES830XL that you can get at Costco for 300$ plus taxes (canadian $ that is). And with Costco, the option of returning if i am not satisfied. There is also the Gaggia Classic (550 at green beanery) that caught my eyes. I also was thinking about super auto but after lots of reading see that you get better shots with semi-auto, cost less and there is the ritual of making the shots. There is also the aftermarket but i find it too risky.

So i am pretty sure i will try the BES830XL, if not happy return it. And then maybe i would go for a Gaggia.

If anyone has experience with this model it would be nice to read what they have to say about it.

Thanks. Paul

I finally bought a Breville BES830XL. I got 2 that were DOA and the third was good. 300$ at Costco. With tax, 350$cdn.

So far i am satisfied. Results are good. And i am just using Lavazza Rossa ground coffee. Can't wait to get to my place and use my Baratza Virtuso grinder.

With the BES830XL, i got single and double wall filters, a 51mm portafilter. No good tamper with it so i ordered a Rosewood Tamper 51mm from espressotec for 47$.

I would have prefer a Gaggia Classic but it would have cost me 650$cdn.

In France, the BES830XL cost around 650$cdn and the Gaggia Classic 400$.

What to think when we say "you get what you pay for" ?

I'll come back with my impression using better coffee.

Our daughter has had a Breville BES830XL for almost two years now and it produces a better espresso than our Saeco Incanto Rapid Steam which was more than twice the price and thats been in for service more times than I can remember.

I've checked Costco locations around our area (Hamilton, ON) and none of the warehouses have any stock or even knowledge of the BES830XL. At which Costco locations in Quebec is this unit available?

Just did myself an espresso with the single wall, single shot filter. Turned the machine on. Waited around 1 minute, until the machine tells me it is ready. Did a one shot of water to heat up the pf. Poured hot water in my glass (this machine give hot water). Put the pf in place with cheap coffee. And go for the drink. All that in a matter on 5 minutes. And the result was very good. Again, so far i am very satisfied with this machine.

Thanks for the info. I spoke with my sister in Ottawa and she'd going to pick one up for me from the Gatineau location.

Was going to buy the BES830XL to replace my Cafe Roma, but instead, I'll probably go for the Avanti Capri available à 399$ at Espresso Mali in Montreal. Pretty sure I'll have a good machine for the price. Grinder will be the next pruchase, since the Breville BCG450XL I own doesn't seems to be recommanded for that type of espresso machine...
