When you start talking about dose weights, micro-adjusting group temp, measuring shot timing, rules of 15, etc with your spouse...that's when she starts thinking you're crazy!  I keep most of this stuff to myself, so all she knows is...I'm really into my espresso setup...lol

I can picture my wife's eyes glazing over and rolling into the back of her head if I say too much like that!

Ask me how I know!

Hi All,

The last few extractions using the bottomless filter have had water leaks, severe enough that I had to move the cup's edge directly under the espresso drip.  Since the last time, I cleaned around inside the group head as well as possible.  The extraction is good, tastes very good, but maybe the grind is too fine.  Takes about 40 seconds and when finished, there is water on top of the puck.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris

It is all about taste, I use, for the most part Redbird espresso and he advises a 30 to 35 second shot AFTER YOU SEE THE COFFEE START TO FLOW. This will add about 5 more seconds if you add .... from the time you push the button. How does it taste? That is the important part. If it tastes good, then there is nothing wrong and do not worry about a little water on the puck, you do not eat the puck so who cares if it is a little soggy?

Water leaks around the PF. Even dirty, you should be able to get a seal though you will not be able to stop one if it develops while pulling the shot, try tightening the PF a little more before you start pulling the shot. Even now, with a clean machine, sometimes I get lazy and do not tighten the PF enough and I get a small leak around the PF, stuff happens, learn from it and move on.

Okay, so I shouldn't worry about the water on top - great.  The taste has been improving steadily, but I have yet to receive any of the ordered coffees.  I think that will make a big difference.  I do have some of Jim's coffee from 1st line, which tastes great, but has too much caffeine for me.  I have several different coffees coming and plan to call Redbird today to see about mixing the Redbird decaf with regular Redbird.

Good news.  I did tighten it this morning and had no significant water leaks.  It takes a little muscle to tighten it enough to avoid the leaks; that was my real concern.

Thanks again for all your help.

I tried to talk coffee with my wide when I got Silvia because I was excited and wanted to share that.

I got lots of " uh huh" responses!

Now if it was about jewelry, clothes or shoes, she would be excited!
