Descaling or Decalcifying: What is the difference between these 2 procedures and what kind of cleaning solution is proper to use?
There is a bottle labeled Delonghi Descaler that came with the machine.
We use the whole bottle as it was suggested in the user's manual for a Descaling procedure.
Now, the Descaling light is on again, but before ordering another Delonghi Descaler which is kind of pricey for a single use, I just like to make sure that is no other products like it.
Any information on the mentioned above issue would be gratefully appreciated.

The processes are one and the same: two words for the same thing. As for products, there are plenty of descaling solutions out there, from Urnex to vinegar. My personal favorite is citric acid, as it's cheap and leaves no off tastes or smells. However, if your machine is still under warranty at all, you might want to check the manual to see if there's anything preventing you from trying a different product. Lots of info here otherwise, on the descaling procedure and solutions to buy or make.

Hi,

Yup, two words for the same thing.  You don't have to use the Delonghi product on your Magnifica, there are others like Dezcal (powder) or as was mentioned Citric Acid.  For sure don't use vinegar to descale your machine, as it is not good for the pump.  But really any products meant for descaling espresso machines will be fine.  Dezcal is about $6 for four packets (uses), but I'm not sure Delonghi approves it for use in those machines -- good point Steve on the warranty.

If you want to make the message go away in the meantime you can just run plain water for the descale and the rinse cycle -- as long as it completes the entire cycle.  And there is nothing from preventing you from running a new descale cycle (even if it doesn't prompt you to) once you get your product.

How do you like your machine, by the way?

Thank you EspressoRepairExperts for a quick reply.
I ended ordering Durgol Swiss Espresso Special Decalcifier that listed to be safe for Delonghi machines.

This is what I like about my Delonghi Magnifica XS:
  1. Makes Great Espresso
  2. Perfect unit size for small kitchen space

This is what I don’t like about my Delonghi Magnifica XS:
  1. It shots down automatically after only 3 hours. There is no option to program for longer.
  2. User manual CD that came with the product, is very confusing and really for similar machine but not for that exact one
  3. Metallic (or not) tray top when you would place your cup on, is getting scratched very easily
  4. Most of the parts made from cheap plastic that could easily brake
  5. Getting clotted way very often (I’m trying to use not oily beans)
  6. If machine brakes there is only one option: to pay $250 first and send the unit to the only one authorized repair shop in US. But there is no guarantee that you ending paying more for repair.

Good to hear your feedback on the machine -- thanks for sharing.

It's been my experience that that model produces really nice shots for a superautomatic.  Are you in the US?  Those terms of having your machine serviced don't sound right to me!  You might want to check that out or call Delonghi directly to confirm.

I have checked that when I bought this machine at the store and with DeLonghi as well. The only authorized repair shop at Upper Saddle River, NJ
Same story with my old Jura Capresso F8 that is currently collecting dust in my garage waiting for me to find $250 to send that unit for repair to Closter, NJ.
Unfortunately this is the only way to fix these. Trust me, I went trough hell fighting with Jura US customer service
