The problem is (in a sense) your revised budget of ~$1500 gives you a lot of HX machines to choose from, but very few are plumbable. For example, the Izzo Alex II can easily be switched back-and-forth between plumbed and tank, but it's $1995. Now, I know that the Quick Mill Andreja Premium has a plumb-in option, but it's $1695, and off the top of my head, I am not sure whether the less expensive Quick Mill Anita can be plumbed. Check with Chris or Mary.
Take a look at the Fiorenzato Briccoletta. This is a direct-connect (plumbed-in) machine ($1525), as is the Fiorenzato Volante ($1499). And the aforementioned Bezzera BZ02 comes in TWO models: tank (BZ02S), or direct connect (BZ02RPM); they are prices identically ($1049).
Actually, the deal is for $2275 but for an additional $100 he can make it plumbable. He has a GREAT 6 year warranty and the machine is made just for you but you have to wait about 6 weeks for it to be made.
If you take into account that his grinder lists for $600, this is a pretty good deal on a great setup but it IS more than you stated.
Most plumbable machines I have found are $1900 and up.

This was going to be my suggestion. I called them this morning and they said they had 4. With that kind of inventory on buyers remorse machines, I bet you could get them to knock some money off....I'd give them a call and ask -- maybe buy your accessories through them (if they have what you're looking for) too so they're more likely to knock some more off the machine.
That's the one "disadvantage" of it is the cost of replacing the board if it goes out. My machine is nowhere near new and the board works just fine though. I don't personally know of anyone who has had to replace it but it isn't impossible and it definitely isn't cheap.
