If it is as others have stated, in many posts previously, it will have a sticker saying calibrated.
If your unsure, drop in the blind and run a shot. If the gauge goes above 10 and or higher to 11 or above. Then your OPV has not been set correctly.
As to the smart grinder....
I have removed most of the extra shims from the 4 or 5 I have worked on... They did not need the shims as much as the owners needed to be using fresh beans and not stale rubbish from some large store. AND no, an expiry date of Dec 2012 or Feb 2013 does not mean they are great beans... Look for a roasted on date...
Sorry, not correct. Only machines from the original shipment that have been calibrated in the US have that sticker. All subsequent production has been rectified & does not have a "Calibrated" sticker on the box.

My blog is in my signature and will be updated tonight with what Dr C has done so far.
It will also include a new mod of the BES900 shortly as well. I have arriving a new expansion valve, something a little more beefy than the existing plastic OPV.
I also have some good and not so good, read, spurting everywhere vids of the naked pours and a good one, all up tonight.
The naked is certainly something that takes getting used to, making sure the grind is all in the right position and the tamp is exactly equal, it's fun :)

Ok, I received my replacement BDB with the corrected OPV. The week number is now 1144 (rather than 1133) and the pressure now goes up a little over 9.5bar (rather than ~12bar on the other machine) and it makes a big difference to shot. I was happy with the machine before, now I'm *really* happy. Certainly is an excellent example of why pressure is important, I won't be dismissing it so lightly in future.
Thanks Breville for a great product and excellent customer service.
Hi Tony, this code just shows there was potenially a general error. Please follow this procedure to get more detailed info:
With the power cord plugged IN & turned ON at the wall socket. Machine OFF Press & hold IN all four buttons simultaneously, Menu, Arrow Down, Arrow Up, Exit. While holding them all down, press the Power button The LCD will now be in the Service Mode There will be a single, double or even triple digit displayed. This is the number of shots over 7 secs, divided by 10. So if you had 12 on the LCD, this would mean you have pulled 120 shots longer than 7 secs. Press the Menu button You will then see a four digit display XX:XX make a note of the 2 digits to the left & the right of the colon. Let me know what these numbers are & I can tell you if you have a problem or not. Press the Exit button at any time to exit service mode & go back to startup mode.
The first number yielded 6, which is a little odd cause I just got the machine and there is no way I pulled 60 shots already, I'm guessing 20 tops if doubles are worth +2. Do they pull a few at the factory as part of the quality assurance process?
ok, i had a set-too-high OPV machine, sn 1133 xxxx. matt from breville, (kenji doesn't work there any more), sent me a new one, sn 1144 xxxx. works great. the pucks i prepare, extract at more or less 8.5-8.9 bar. it never exceeds 9 bar. mouthfeel is richer. perfect.
there are some differences to what we were expecting, from the earlier, properly calibrated/returned, machines:
1] the box does NOT have a sticker on it that says, "calibrated" 2] the box does contain not only the replacement machine, but the full set of accessories... so basically, it's a box with a whole new machine as you would have bought it from the store.
