I can confirm that there is a firmware update. This primarily deals with managing programmed shot volumes at varying rates of flow. That's how it's related to the OPV. Other parts of the update relate to backend management of small stuff, all the major stuff was well sorted before the software was signed off prior ro production.
Thanks Phil, that's good to know. Just to report, I haven't had any issues with the volumetric settings; it's very precise, shot after shot, although I also have my grind and tamp perfected. ;)
Ok So I will get to use my dbd probably first week of Feb. I have read this thread and have come away with several things to do to this machine straight away. As this is my first espresso machine that actually counts as one I am wondering should I wait to make the changes suggested? How would I know if my machine is one with the opv valve already calibrated? I also have a smart grinder that I added the shims to...even though breville insisted that I don't need them.. any grind setting to start at or machine settings to start at. Also any other tips or trick would be greatly appreciated.

If it is as others have stated, in many posts previously, it will have a sticker saying calibrated.
If your unsure, drop in the blind and run a shot. If the gauge goes above 10 and or higher to 11 or above. Then your OPV has not been set correctly.
As to the smart grinder....
I have removed most of the extra shims from the 4 or 5 I have worked on... They did not need the shims as much as the owners needed to be using fresh beans and not stale rubbish from some large store. AND no, an expiry date of Dec 2012 or Feb 2013 does not mean they are great beans... Look for a roasted on date...

I got the BDB and Smart Grinder for Christmas and have been exploring/learning since. I have the OPV issue (machine goes past 12 bars during extraction), and have been in contact with Matt at Breville to get a replacement. Not a rush for me since I am getting good results with fresh beans. I have been getting better and better results since day one and the only thing I have done is removed the plastic insert.
As for the smart grinder, I am on my 3rd. The first one was dead out of the box. The second one, even though it was a model that did not require shims, would not grind fine enough. In fact the second one had no noticeable grind difference from 6 steps from fine, all the way to fine. There had to be a malfunction in it. The third grinder, not requiring shims (due to late model #) is perfect out of the box. On the finest grind setting it is close to Turkish and I got a 50 second, < 2 ounce pour. I currently have the smart grinder on 7 steps from fine, 2 steps weaker for a double shot. I am using Velton's Bonsai. This gives me a 1.75 oz pour in about 35 seconds (including factory set - perfusion). I can go finder, but for my taste, 7 away from the finest setting works.
I have a scale but haven't started testing weights yet. I know I am above 18 grams (pre-ground) with the stock basket.
So, I spoke with Breville about my machine and am having a calibrated machine shipped to me. It was explained that the calibration issue was known and that the problem was fixed in manufacturing. The machine being sent out is a new machine, not refurbished which is good news for me/us. I asked about the bottomless PF and they're on their way here for end of Feb maybe but nothing formal has been announced.
I have family in Australia, anyone know where you can buy a bottomless PF in AU?

Thanks for the replys, I will keep my compents on the grinder brief as this is the wrong thread for that but I was telling breville up and down that my machine would not do fine enough without the shims and they would believe me. Anyway as far as the fresh beans are concerened i was planning on getting the Filicori Zecchini Whole Bean Sampler to try.
