So I'm just curious, since I never remove my water tank, filling from the front, how do you keep track of the replacement date?  Certainly the date reminder wheel on the top of the filter holder is of little use.  I time it the same as my Britta pitcher which also suggests a 2 month change.

I am pretty sure they suggest switching the water filter out when the cleaning like comes on.

I believe the manual suggests every 2 months.  I've had my machine for about 6 months and the cleaning light hasn't come on yet so I'm not sure that's a good indicator for me.  Unless I'm just not making enough brews or my cleaning light is broken or I really do need to put that much water through it to wear out the filter.

This is correct. I personally use google calendar and have an event trigger every two months reminding me to change the filters. The wheel is useful in case google calendar fails.

I remove the water tank once a week for a good rinse. Because of its design, it never actually empties during operation. So there's a chance of some aquatic life (plant) manifesting itself in the reservoir if it's not washed out periodically.

I love the front fill design. I love the ease with which the reservoir can be removed. But it is not a wash-friendly shape. Lots of nooks and crannies, hard to get the algae out if they ever get started.

Too bad you can only order NPF from USA, drop down for country is disabled. Breville Canada's side is empty of any such goodies.

Update to my first posts, enjoying my BDB and as suggested by the thread I upgraded my grinder to Breville Smart Grinder, awesome value for the money, now consistently getting 20-30 seconds shots depending on how I adjust things, machine has bee flawless.

This is why the Lord gave us bleach. A weak bleach solution - like spoonful per tank - and a good soak for half an hour will take care of any algae that may want to grow in the tank, not that I've seen any. I do detect some of the slimy feel associated with unwanted bacterial growth on the sides of the tank when it's not cleaned weekly, but you'll need to expose it to light to get plant life to bloom.

Remove the carbon filter before using bleach or soap in the tank, of course.

Someone here (sorry, can't remember now who it was) a few months back had mentioned in passing that the Rancilio Silvia portafiler spring was a good lower tension substitute for the stock spring.   Back when many were experimenting with the VST/La Marzocco Strada baskets I ordered one but the standard ridged version is what you got back then unless you ordered directly from VST.  The stock Breville spring with the VST/La Marzocco Strada is so overbearing that it is really only useful with ridgeless baskets unless you are willing to rip your fingernails out or damage the basket trying to pry it out with tools.   I thought for sure I would warp the basket trying to remove it to swap in a blind filter for back flushing.

So, remembering that comment on the Rancilio spring, I got the lighter spring and it is a great improvement.  Now I have no aversion to a quick swapout for a couple 5 second freshwater backflushes after every session.  I am now actually happy with the ridged VST because the Rancilio spring provides just the right amount of holding power.  I also got a new triple VST basket for the Breville naked portafilter (and new spring, of course).  The deeper basket is a perfect match for the naked portafilter,  just reaching the bottom of the portafilter for perfect visibility.  It is now my go to basket since i usually like a larger shot anyway.  I can't say if this is a better solution than the stock spring and ridgeless VSTs (I did not try that combo) but for anyone who already has ridged baskets this alternate spring is the way to go.
