Headline says it all.

I've had my BDB for about a month- I'm just getting comfortable with the machine and have pulled some delicious shots. However- I've noticed that water from the hot water dispenser has a horrible plastic taste to it. It is very strong- rendering Americanos undrinkable. There have been two posts (from 2011 and 2012) with similar concerns, but no answers. I'm hoping to get fresh eyes on this issue!

Shotcaller,

I would try running about a full tank of hot water through your hot water tap. My guess is it's something in the path between the pump and the hot water tap.  If it was something in the pump or boiler you would get the same flavor from the grouphead as they come from the same boiler.

If after flushing about 40 oz of water through the hot water tap you still get the flavor email / call breville @ askus@brevilleusa.com or 1-866-273-8455 and they probably would know what it is as they have a diagram of what's in the flow path.

hope that helps

Thanks for the advice. I'll continue flushing the system through the hot water tap. I'll fill the tank with mineral water to see if the flavor persists.

I'm almost scared to get a replacement machine- everything else about my BDB (/a) is perfect.

Quick question for everyone...

I've seen replacement water filters at Walmart - they're not Breville branded, (Keurig maybe???), but they look identical to the ones shipped with the BDB. Chances are these things are all the same, just boxed in various branded boxes. Has anyone tried using a non Breville branded water filter in their machine, or have you all played it safe by ordering the Breville ones?

Sorry WJordan, when Breville swapped my machine they told me to keep the filters if I wanted to so I have something like 14 filters; haven't bought one yet and won't be buying one for a while.  How significant is the price difference?

Same with me.  Cleaning tables, on the other hand, are a different story.

I see the BDB is listed as out of stock on the Breville USA website. Wondering if they are making changes that required them to stop production?

I have a shot time issue. I pull double shots with both stock basket and 20G vst basket.

Using 18 grams of espresso I get 36 grams of coffee in  23 seconds including preinfusion.  I think I should be closer to 32 seconds using 8 seconds of preinfusion.

If I go a little finer I get OPV valve causing fluttering, but I then get a longer shot time.

How long do your double shots run for?

Toiler: what kind of grinder are you using? and what pressure (bar) are you hitting when the shot is running for only 23 seconds vs. pressure your opv is kicking in
