Looking forward to to upgrading to get the cleaning cycle. The need for a parallel port is pretty wild, but I have an old pc around that will do the trick.
houdina, from where did you obtain the LM kit?
networkcrasher, did you buy the LM kit too? If so, from where? If not, what and from whom did you get the equipment needed to upgrade?
I brought mine from Franke. After I take care of a few local machines and my brothers in fl I would be to try and work out some loaner program. The only real issue is the dongle itself doesn't look all that sturdy and I have doubts about it surviving too many trips across the country. Gregg
I'm doubt if this is the current firmware for the GB/5. The programming is fairly identical, but the GB/5 has a different Atmel proc in it, thus would require a different hex file.
That's great news, it looks like Mark has found a cheap dongle that will work. One note, please be careful, the machine has to be plugged in and the main power switch on to do this. The board is exposed as are lots of places to electrocute yourself on, if you are not up for working around hot electrical wires have someone help you.
The nice folks at Franke/LM loaned me the dongle and cable a couple of months ago to do the update (I think as a test case to see if a civilian could do it without bricking the machine), and it went fine. But I was not aware of the new backflush cycle. How is it accessed?

I have asked a local coffee service shop about upgrading the firmware for me. Franke will sell them the software and hardware necessary for this upgrade but it will cost them almost $400. The only way I can move forward at this point is to buy it all from Franke myself as they do not want to purchase this equipment.
I was under the impression that the firmware file, although large, was available without cost by email. It also seems that the hardware requires a parallel port but networkcrasher on the site gs3cafe.com had some less expensive alternatives using other ports.
Is this about what others are finding? I hate to have to pay $400 on my own because I'm the only GS/3 owner locally and apparently none of the local coffee shops are getting firmware updates to their LMs so the servicers are not buying equipment to perform them.

$400 is ridiculous. The kit from LM is $150, and the firmware is free. I have the firmware file and permission from LM to post it, which I will be doing once my instructional write up is completed. The firmware file is a few KB, by no means large. The software is free as well. The only place where there is cost is in the dongle itself.
The parallel port is what is required, regardless of what hardware you use to obtain one. The only way to program the proc is through a parallel port programmer.
Even if you only have access to USB, you can easily have a working solution for less than $30. And if you buy the combo USB/Parallel programming device, you're still in under $70 or so.
