Your symptoms description and repair instructions are spot-on. My unit appears to have incorporated some improvements. First, no torx screws (just phillips). There are 7 screws beneath the bottom cover securing the sides. Most importantly, the double bypass valves have been improved. The retaining cap for the spring/plug have been redesigned. They are one piece.
I started with valve #2 (randomly). I could find nothing wrong. I can tell you that finding the spring and small metal rod after they fly onto berber carpet is a unique challenge. At this point, I resorted to magnification to examine the two valves. I could see no difference between the two. They both looked fine.
I finally saw that the spring and plug in valve one were installed backwards. This explained why my symptoms were intermittent for two months. I occasionally had "launch failures" trying to produce espresso. A few days ago, it refused to launch at all.
I bought my "manufacturer refurbished" unit at "Big Lots" for an insanely low price. Yes, these items are a gamble but I took the bet. My hunch is that when it was returned to Krups, it worked fine when they tested it. They had no reason to look further. I am sure they have a category for "user error."
Bottom line - even in the "improved" units, there remains a potential problem with the double bypass valves. Again, there is a simple fix. Remove the the unbroken retaining cap and turn the spring/pin around with the spring going in first and the pointed-end of the pin facing inwards.
