Subject: New Rancilio Portafilter or Old Commercial Portafilter?

Hi!

I'm a total newbie here and just entered this world with a used Silvia and Rocky combo.  Love'm, but my machine is an older unit (logo decal on face vs. cast name plate) and came with a dinky portafilter (ribbed handle, light weight) on which the handle is already bending.

So I'm thinking about getting the commercial Rancilio portofilter from EspressoTec (only $58 shipping included), but I've noticed that Rancilio has a new portofilter (more ergonomic looking handle with a logo on the end).  I've seen and touched the old style PF and it's a nice hefty unit.

Has anyone seen and touched the newer PF?

Is it as well made and  hefty???

Which should I get?

Oh.....so  far I've had a couple of truly amazing shots.....not as easy as it looks!!!!

Thanks!

Hi RBatsch,

Welcome and congrats on your Silvia and Rocky combo !

I have purchased the new rancilio portafilter for Silvia and can tell you that other than the handle, it is exactly the same as the previous commercial portafilter.

So it is just a matter of preference, but I am glad I purchased the new style because it feels and looks great on Silvia.

Hope that helps you with your decision.

Joe

Thanks for your reply Joe.....does the handle part of the new design have the same weight and solid feel as the old design?  How does it look on the Silvia....got a pic?
Thanks

In my opinion it has a very solid feel and weighs at least as much as the old design.

See the link below for one of my pics of it on Silvia.
