Subject: Sylvia's 'knocking' after warm-up

So, I turn her on in the morning before I go brush and shower and the rest of my morning's ablutions, so that she's all warm and toasty and ready to pull shots when I am.  I make sure that I run some water out of the steam wand before I wander away, too.  Lately, as I return and start to grind and prep, she'll start a quiet knocking that sounds as if it's coming from the area of the bottom of the reservoir.
In the interest of full disclosure, The only real mod I've made to her is to extend the res pickup and OPV discharge tubes to they bypass the reservoir and pickup and discharge into a 2.5 gallon water container behind her.*  It sounds like maybe a pool vacuum pump, or something.  A two or three cycle per second muffled 'knock-knock-knock-knock-knock-knock-knock'.
Of course, this is happening when the pump is off, and the only switch that is on is the power switch.
Turning on the hot water or the brew switches momentarily will make the noise stop, sometimes to start up again, sometimes it goes away til I've finished making my morning cappas.
Anyone with any ideas as to what may be causing the noise?  How to stop it, or if I should ev en worry about it?

  • which is real convenient, as the rectangular containers are the same width, standing on end, as Sylvia is, and about the same height, and for me, pretty much the exact same depth as the distance from the back wall that I'd like Sylvia to be while in use.  The only drawback is that I used to tuck her completely under the cabinet above her when not in use, and now just the reservoir-cover deep area is underneath.

Hi Psyd,

I too get the knocking sounds sometime. I found it to be air in one of the line in the water reservoir. I either draw in the group or the steam wand, then it stop.
