I am going to buy an espresso machine. I want Gaggia but do not know which is better
Gaggia Classic or Gaggia new baby class D.

Differences:
Gaggia new baby class D - has 180 degreed steam wand, has place for bigger cup under portafilter, has dosing system, pre-infusion, touch buttons, stainless steel body - but using thin steel, I heard that the new Baby is manufactured in Romania or China.

Gaggia Classic - thick stainless steel, years of tradition behind, sturdy buttons, beautiful design, was manufactured in Italy.

Which machine will be more reliable? Does Gaggia baby class D have some new technical improvements except 180 degrees steam wand, dosing, and touch screan (buttons). Maybe improved corossion resistance of the aluminium boiler? I am uncertain of the reliability this touch buttons on new Baby class.

Doesn't look like anyone has responded, but I have the same question. The Classic is back ordered for months, apparently because of a strike in Italy but the Baby Class is available. My understanding is that Gaggia is discontinuing the Classic so I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the Baby Class. Same price so what's the difference?

Just curious............... Have you looked at the consumer reviews??? There are lots of reviews on both of these.

Yes I have. There are plenty of reviews of the Classic which is not suprising considering it has been around a while. And I've read reviews of the Baby Twin, but not the machine WLL calls the Baby Class. So I'm trying to figure out what it offers that is not in the other machines.

Well I have had the new Baby Gaggia Class(none doser) for nearly seven months now and I find it great and btw it was made by Gaggia in Italy not Romania or China. In fact I purchased direst from the factory. Anyway as far as comparisions go with the Classic I do not think either machine will dissapoint. I like the newer model for several reasone, one is the easy access to the water tank and the placement of the steam knob. The steam knob on the Classic can be awkard to use. It's also a much better looking machine than the original Classic. I have used both and both make great espresso but I find the Baby class makes more steam and makes it quicker although both have pretty basic wands. In making my decision I had to think that Gaggia had put all their know how into producing the newer machines and that lessons learnt along the way with the Classic ect were put into practise in the making of the Baby Class range. I for one am happy with my choice.

Thanks for the input Gerry. I didn't want to wait for them to settle that strike in Italy. need to order. Going thru espresso withdrawals.

Hi aj, where did you hear about the strike? I have a grinder on order that has been overdue for some time and the company is quoting a strike as the cause but I can't find any other reference to it on the web. If you've heard about it from a separate source, it would verify what the company is telling me.

I have a Baby Class (non-dose) and am very happy with it. It's way better than the old Krups thing I used to use. I had to return the first one though, due to a faulty steam button. John Lewis (the store) were really helpful about the replacement and even refunded me the £55 by which the price had dropped between purchase and replacement. Not bad! It's a good-looking machine, too.

sorry, should check these post more often.

Actually, I have not independently verified it, just got the same story from two different vendors. the delays are ridiculous and now they have pushed all the gaggia prices up $100. I also ordered an mdf and they are claiming that is delayed as well even though it was supposed to be in stock. wonder if it is a way to get the new pricing in to the system

This can be considered a mini review of both Baby D and Baby Class.
I ordered a "refurbished" Baby D from WLL. It arrived well packed and
supposedly tested prior to shipping. I set up the machine according
to instructions and tried to prime it but the pump or the buttons were
not functioning. So I called WLL an replaced the machine with a new
Baby Class. However looking at Baby D there there were several design
problems. First the material that Baby D is made of (sparkling
plastic) scratches easily and underneath is a white plastic that
really shows (there were few minor scratches on the machine). The
buttons on flimsy. The removal of the drip tray is awkward, difficult
and poorly designed. The placement of the water tank and the removal
is difficult and very poorly designed. I had no issues with the
rigidness of the body with the plastic shell but the quality of the
plastic was an issue.
Soooo, for the above reason I opted to the Baby Class with a revised
design, and metal body. The Baby Class is heavy and well put
together. the buttons feel more sturdy, a best of all there is light
that comes on when you turn the machine on (power light) that was
missing on the Baby D. The base is painted metal which I would have
preferred it to be stainless steel since it can be scratched. The
drip tray and water reservoir are well designed and placed. After
about 2 weeks using the machine I have figured out the tricks to get a
good shot. However I expected a bit more from a $500 machine. For
one thing more temperature stability. The frother is a joke. With the
wand attachment it make bathtub size bubbles and without is it is too
short and difficult to use. However I like the articulating joint (it
moves in every direction) and the joint fells sturdy and seems to be
attached to the body unlike the Baby D that was hanging from the steam
pipe and was very flimsy. I have ordered the Saeco wand to get more
length and see how the steaming goes. I have had better luck steaming
with my 10 year old the Krups wand than with Gaggia.
Considering what the machine is made of, compare to other appliances
that you purchase for home like a large stainless steel gas grill or a
refrigerator, you don't get much for your money . I guess this is the
price of having the machines made in Europe.
Regards
Amir
