Just got my silvia a few days ago and so far just getting bitter shots that blond out after about 7-8 secs. Ive done the temp surf exactly how it was done on the you tube video, however maybe havent let the machine warm up quite long enough--maybe 15-20 minutes. Puck looks ok when I knock it out as well. Using a rocky and fresh Black Cat roased on Tues. I found my zero point to be 6 and went up seven from there to start out with. Assuming my zero point is correct. Ive been tamping at roughly 30 to where my coffee is even with the line in the double basket. Im thinking go another notch or 2 down on my grind? Any other suggestions??

Not long enough.  At least 45 minutes.  An hour is better.

What is your shot timing/volume?  Are you using the double basket?  Did you buy a tamper?

I wouldn't get too hung up on the Rocky zero point, and notches above, etc.  If the shot is too fast (try for a little over 2 oz in 25 seconds), then grind 2 notches finer.  If too slow, then grind 2 notches coarser.  Once you get close, then just change it 1 notch at a time.

Will do--Im getting the volume but to quick around 15sec--Yes im using the double basket. I do have a tamper as well that fits well. At first I think my tamp was uneven--that made a slight improvement. The shots look good to start but blonde after 6-8 seconds--

Hi Josh,

I notice that you have a Maestro grinder.  I had a *$ Baristra which is very similar.  It was an acceptable grinder for drip and even French Press.  For the Silvia it falls short.  I was never able to get a pull longer than about 17 seconds until the Silvia was paired with the Rocky.

You will notice that the theme here is that the grinder is more important than the espresso machine.  Believe it.

Phil

Grind finer.  Shoot for 25 seconds.

Are you using a bottomless portafilter? If not, I highly suggest getting one because it's probably the best tool for learning and diagnosing technique.

Im using the double basket that came with silvia--Im using the Rocky grinder--not the maestro--I did move down a few notches and im getting the time to 25--getting slightly better results. One other thing I notice however is I get an imprint in my ouch after the shot is brewed--Not sure if it is from the screw in thats holds the screen in or from channeling?? Im just puttung enough coffee in to come up to the line in the side of the basket--I should probably be more consistant in how much coffee I am using--thanks for the advice!
