it continues to leak, but not quite as much. There was grime all over it when I first adjusted it, so perhaps the grime was keeping it from leaking up until now?
in any event, do i need to now replace the pstat, and if so, how exactly do I do that?
Probably so. I would try contacting Whole Latte Love even though you bought it used. They may be willing to help. At the very least if you do need to replace it then they could sell you the part and probably give you tech support in replacing it.
I'm wondering at this point if all the bitterness was due to whatever the guy used to decalcify the machine or if he ran something else through it. Did he say what he used?
That's odd that there would be grime all over the OPV. There's shouldn't be.
It's disappointing that you've had a negative experience with this machine. Mine has served me well. Typically it's a lot of machine for the money.

I've tried contacting WLL about 5 times now, since I've gotten the machine...every time, I was told the techs were busy, I should leave a message, and they would return my call. They have not yet done so.

actually, he did not decalcify...he confused that term with backflushing, which is ths only maintenance he did.

I'm not upset...I'm actually enjoying the learning process somewhat! In the meantime, my gaggia continues to serve me well.
This thread has gotten long enough...I'm going to start a new one to request help on changing the OPV.
thanx again to everyone (particularly Brad) for all the help.......!

I'd try some white food grade grease, or Dow 111 Silicone on the threads of the OPV screw. It may be enough to make the screw turn easier & keep it from leaking.
Brad sorry, I can't see from you pics., the OPV on the Office Control is plastic??
Hi Alan I'm glad you're enjoying yourself getting to know the innards of a machine can be a little daunting, but ultimately it'll be a rich experience and will make you one with your machine and ultimately your espresso. I also think that once the Expobar is up and running you'll put the Gaggia away for good!

Craig,
The OPV screw will be made of plastic.
drtzali,
I'm sorry to hear you're not pulling great shots.......... yet;-) Your temperature issue could be a pstat that's set too high, or the need for a thermosyphon restrictor (check this page at the Expobar Owners Group). However it could be more serious:-( It may also be a hole in the HX, or a faulty valve in the return of your thermosyphon. I had my Office Leva repaired under warranty, and the tech told me that the thermosyphon return line to the boiler has a one-way valve fitted to prevent hot water flowing back along the return line. My thermosyphon was generating "Super-Heated water that was taking mega-flushes to deal with. They also fitted the restrictor, and now my Office Leva has VERY consistent shot temps. I understand your desire to sort this problem yourself. I recommend that you find out where your pstat is set at first. If it's not cycling in the 1.0 - 1.3 bar range, but towards the 1.5 bar range, get it adjusted down. Once the machine is cycling over 1.5 bar, the safety valve should start to activate. If the pstat is cycling in the right range, I would get your machine to a tech asap. As has been said before, Expobars are a lot of machine for the money, so you will eventually get some great shots.
