This was mentioned on alt.coffee, but I have not seen it posted here. I had to check 3 different stores, but I finally located one Presso manual espresso machine. It is definitely worth checking out.

Have you heard of the mod created by Jim Schulman? It involved using a teflon plug to fill up the airspace above the grouphead which created bad shots... I'll get the link up for you. I have a hard time believing it's just $5.99! I've seen it for more like $100.

Here's the link.

yes indeed- I have already ordered the plug (if you include the shipping, the teflon disc is twice the cost of the machine!)  If I can get some good shots after the mod I think I will bring the machine in to work.

If I had seen any others I would have picked them up for fellow cGeeks.

May I suggest getting the piston rod lengthened. I've heard it brings up the pressure easier without sacrificing the maximum shot length. Oh and maybe using paper insulation around that pour-over brew chamber thing. Oh and take a hole saw or milling machine to the portafilter. Alright, I think I need to buy one!

Yes, well, I get a ton of spam emails suggesting just the same thing :-)

I considered doing something to make the stock piston travel farther down the cylinder, and partially filling the 'pie wedge' spaces with epoxy, but in the end I decided I wanted to go with a mod that has already been tested. The advantage of the plug is that it does not need to have much strength- it is simply eliminating air space. If I put a spacer on the top of the piston it would be bearing all of the lever force. I don't see how there would be a difference in shot size, since the overall stroke of the piston remains the same. Besides, the pf basket is on the small size, so I wouldn't want to pull shots much bigger than 1.5 oz or so.

I bought one of these things at Marshals last night.  It did me no good to say that I saw on Coffee-Geek that they were selling them for $5.99.  I had to pay $39.99 + tax.

While I won't be selling my Silvia real soon, this thing can make a credible shot.  The learning curve is probably more difficult than Silvia or even a La Pavoni lever machine.

I may have found an acceptable alternative to Jim Schulman's piston mod.  I just don't have time for another project.  I have most of the PID parts for my Silvia and a dead Z&D in pieces which is to be my version 2 Z&D so I had to find a "no effort" solution to the Presso "air lock" problem.  What I do is fill the top of the piston with hot water with the handles down, then slightly raise and lower the handles.  With each mini-pump of the handles an air bubble floats to the top of the water.  Repeat this untill most of the air is blead from the piston (no more bubbles).  Add water back to the two shot mark, raise the levers, then pull the shot.  Work fast as the machine is cooling all the while.

I have to agree with Jim that this machine scores high in the pita catagory, but mastering it offers satifaction not unlike mastering a La Pavoni.

At only 4 lbs you can put this machine in your suitcase and have espresso in your hotel room.  I suppose you could put it in your backpack and have espresso almost anyplace where you can have fire.

Phil

I got mine yesterday for 5.99. It's cool to look at so if it never works I'm happy. Could someone post the McMaster - Carr part number? I keep coming up with very expensive foot long rods on their web site.

8596K153 Is the one I used.

Actually, I might have been able to get away with a 1" length. You may want to take the cylinder out and measure the space you will be filling.

I made my plug yesterday and glued it in. I only had a chance to play with it a bit this morning. I think another tirck is to only raise the arms enough to let the water in, if you raise the arms all the way you let air in even with a plug.

I may have taken the prize for the ugliest 'fabrication' job in creating the plug.

I forgot to ask what glue will hold teflon to the plastic plunger?
