** Rocky SS Doser  vrs  Mazzer Mini  Shootout **

  • Rockys 17gr bean charge took 18 seconds to grind.

  • Minis 17 gr bean charge took 14 seconds to grind.

  • The Mini's grind time is 22% faster than Rocky, & with brand new burrs installed in Rocky just for this test. In a visual comparison the grind result collected in a cup for dispensing looks a lot more fluffier too.

  • I also analyzed the grind particle size for consistency/evenness with what I believe, is a 10 power Lithographers printing type checker.

Rockys burrs are 50mm & the Mini's are 58mm. This translates to a 13.8% larger diameter.
Silvias approx 2 oz shot from Rockys grind was 3/8",6/16" of settled crema,(Guinness effect) & held a small espresso spoon of coarse granulated white sugar, the consistency of Demerara sugar, for 7 seconds. I usually have Lantic granulated white sugar which is a lot finer, the consistency of say, fine beach sand. This would hold, I believe, a few seconds longer on top of the shot. I only did this to test the density/tightness of the crema, & put sugar if wanted, in the shot glass before the pull.
I don't wanna' wreck that lusicious crema! {:-D

Silvias approx 2 oz shot from Minis grind was 7/16" of settled crema, (Guinness effect), a heavier, gloppier, & tiger striped! pull & held the same volume of sugar for 9 seconds. With blend tweaking & fine tuning Mini, the sugar will stay aloft for 15 secs now.
This is an increase in time of 22.2% originally. The time has now increased to 115%, over the original 7 seconds.

The crema was tighter, denser & the shot notably sweeter tasting, with tiger striping during the extraction.
With the Rocky I would usually add sugar to taste in the shots. The settled crema height I'm now getting is in the order of 1/2" to 5/8"!!
With the Mini I don't have or need to add any sugar.

The Malabar Gold I used for the test was degassed/rested for 68hrs,4hrs short of 72hrs,(3 days). I pulled some more shots the next day & the MG was at 92hrs rest 4 hrs short of 96hrs,(4 days),& the shots crema was much more stable & longer lasting & a darker, red/brown from both grinders.

  • I love both grinders, the Rocky is more than adequate in this regard for espresso grinding, but I bought the Mini just for dedicated espresso grinding. In MVHO it's the ultimate home espresso grinder, & it's not priced into the stratosphere...yet!

  • Rockys 63 usable stepped/indexed click stops for grinding, 80+ with the stop screw removed, is a great grinder for everything from drip to espresso, & I use it every day, for all coffee methods.

  •  Mazzer Mini's stepless infinite three spring tensioned upper burr carrier adjustment is the ultimate for fine tuning your shot as you won't have to vary the tamp pressure to correct extraction times like you would if you needed to be between two grind #'s on Rockys dial.

  • I now have an awesome grinder setup & the best of both worlds for reaching coffee nirvana!
    {:-D

  • The Mazzer Mini is an incredible grinder & just reeks build quality, fit & finish.
I didn't regret this purchase on May 16/03 for one second!
    {:-)

  • I would like to personally thank Chris Nachtrieb of Chris Coffee Service for incredible, outstanding!! customer service, & for the super offer of free expedited 2 day shipping to Canada here,Tony in shipping for getting out my grinder fast & my replacement acrylic doser chamber insert immediately!, Amy & the other girls manning the customer service phones.

Once the switched  Mazzer Mini models are gone, their gone!!,Chris at Chris Coffee Service has said that he won't be stocking the timer model because of the increase in price over the switch model, but this huge $200!! estimated increase is for the Mazzer Mini Electronic doserless.{:-(

Mini shot.
These above pics took approximately 1 minute I guess, from the time I pulled the shots & ran & put them on top of my computer, focused my web cam (Intel Pocket PC camera 1.2 megapixels, & snapped the pics. {:-D

Thanks Jim,

I've probably left out a million things...,if anyone can thing of additional questions I'll add it in the report/posting.

I also analyzed the grind particle size for consistency/evenness with what I believe is a 10 power Lithographers printing type checker, pictured below.
Cheers!

Craig, very interesting report -well done.

Just as a matter of interest, what were your shot timings?

Thanks Ian,

I wasn't using my timer during the pulls, I just count the seconds off in my head.
{:-)
I think I stopped the extraction at 25 secs..., it could have been 22 also, between the Rocky & Mini's grind for the pulls on Silvia.I kept the shot times identical & matched the Mini's grind & resultant shot time with the superfine micrometrical adjustment.
Cheers!

Now the big question - is the Mazzer worth the extra wedge?  (Please bear in mind that I ordered mine yesterday!)

One word, "Yes"!
The difference in price between my Rocky SS doser (May/01 @ $240) & Mini was $135.To some they just couldn't justify the extra cost.Well..., just let me say that once you see & start using the grinder, you'll never look back!
Bite the bullet & get the best IMVHO, & you'll never have to upgrade.
It totally blew me away when I opened the box! {:-D
