Subject: NS Elli Matic stripdown and portafilter questions

Hello coffeegeeks,

I've got a few questions for those who've taken apart NS Elli's, and those who have modified portafilters to fit Elli's.

I spoke to a fairly knowledgeable local guy about fitting a normal NS portafilter to an Elli, explained the concept of "grinding the ears off a standard NS one", and he didn't seem to agree that it'll work, kept saying that the other portafilters are too small (diameter)...  Does anyone have details on what portafilter can be  used (ie from what machine), how it differs from the elli one, and how it's modded?  My idea would be to make a bottomless portafilter using a dremel or drillpress.  :)

On the subject of disassembling the entire boiler for cleaning:  How long does that take approximately?  Also, will I need consumables for that, or can one use standard vellumoid as a gasket?

Thanks in advance!
Jan

My Ellimatic is a 58mm portafilter, and the bottomless I have is a standard commercial 58mm with the ears gournd down (a little over-ground, actually, as it locks at about 3:30 rather than the 6 o'clock you'd normally want). An Oscar pf with the ears ground down will also work fine.

Taking apart the Ellimatic can take a little time and care. There are a couple of threads here and in the General forum on the process with photos detailing  most everything. Those are what I used for reference when I stripped everything down and put it back together.

Not sure about the gasket, as I just picked up a replacement gasket from Espresso Parts. I would imagine any food-safe, sufficiently heat-resistant gasket material could be used.

I've had a read through several of the threads, and while there's no time indication anywhere (not that I saw), it does indeed not seem to be a very difficult operation to stripdown and rebuild the machine.  I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that the local NS agents actually stock the boiler gasket, so no need to Macgyver something there.

I'll try get hold of a standard 58mm portafilter and see what I can make do to make it fit the Elli.  If I run into trouble, I'll post again!

I'll post a pre-post pic once the whole story is done.  :)  All in the name of good coffee, learning, and fun.

Best regards,
Jan

I got a new ellimatic portafilter body from NS a couple of months ago.  bought a handle for it and a deep basket.  Cut out bottom with a hole saw on drill press.  Works like a champ.

What was the diameter of your hole?  I've been looking at doing this, but I'm nervous about the amount of metal left where it connects to the handle.  Especially on my only PF.

I'd be more inclined to buy a naked pf designed for an NS machine and take a Dremel to the ears (or take the two to a local metal shop and have them match the profile onn the Ellimatic pf ears by grinding down the commercial pf.
