After a thorough descale and partial strip down and re-assembly of parts, I discovered that a minor leak in the boiler from the point where the temperature probe is screwed into the boiler seems to cause all of the overheating problems. I rectified the problem using some Teflon plumbing tape around the thread of the temp. probe. The leak was causing water loss from the boiler as the machine is heated up. Water then begins to drip from the brew head, thus indicating pressure loss somewhere. With little or no water in the boiler, the temperature probe gives false or no reading and the machine continues to heat beyond useable parameters. Luckily in this instance, I did switch the machine off before things became worse. The original probe had given the same problem and was changed about 2yrs ago as it's housing was breaking down and was not serviceable. The replacement unit seems different and more robust, however the problem of the leak appears to be something one should keep an eye on when the overheating occurs (and certainly deal with quickly before things become much worse).
