Some posters here (e.g. Nickfrogger "DeLonghi EC155 (and EC152CD, EC310, etc.) Modification Guide & Ideas" ) and elsewhere Click Here (protofusion.org) have indicated that the deLonghi 607706 unpressurized double filter can be successfully used to replace the stock deLonghi pressurized filters. However, these installations tended to be naked portafilters, and I wanted to retain the dual portafilter spouts, as all we make at home with our BAR32 are pairs of singles.
Nick Flatoff (Nickfrogger) from this site graciously provided the outside dimensions of the 607706, roughly 50mm outside dia. and 28mm height. The dimensions looked good for the BAR32 portafilter, so I ordered a 607706 filter from the Gourmet Depot in San Francisco.
The portafilter modification consisted of sawing off (and smoothing with a round file) the threaded appendage inside the metal part, and gluing the metal part to the bottom plastic part, as it's no longer held by the front screw. Used a short nut and bolt to plug the now superfluous hole in the bottom.
Tried it out, works great. Perhaps the best benefit is this filter is actually big enough to contain a full 14 gm of coffee for a double. The stock deLonghi double with the pressurized filter can only hold about 11 gm when completely topped up, mostly because it's tapered to clear that damn threaded thingie.
This is the portafilter before modification and the pressurized filter.
