And what, exactly is making me cry? Got the final parts in to get the Ellimatic running again, got everything installed, fired it up. Everything lights up right, it heats up, no leaks, so I let it come to temperature. After giving it a half hour to stabilize, I grind and pull a shot. Need to tweak the grind, but that'll be for tomorrow. Do a clean water backflush and I hear a "Pop!" - not an electrical one, though - a mechanical one. This is why I cry — one of the ears snapped off the portafilter. No spare, and Elli/matic PFs are hard to find.
Everything else is working fine, but I still have no espresso at home. Weep with me.

I've read other NS Ellimatic Owners complain about how restrictive the Elli's shallow pf is for them. These are the guys who adapt the 21 gram portafilters by filing down the ears. You can make up for the height restiction by removing the drip tray grating. I still have the stock pf and have never used anything else but I'd be interested in how a deeper basket works out for you. The Elli basket may be unique but its still 58 mm. . .

sorry to read this and I can understand you...
I would give it a try and glue the part with JB WELD EPOXY (will stand 500 deg.F) and then grind it to correct size. it will not be plated and shiny, but at least you'll get a working PF
If you have access to a mechanical shop, drilling and inserting 2 screws (in addition to epoxy) can also be a solution, but this requires tools and experience of a dentist to do.

BUMMER!!!!! Due to the stresses involved on the ears, I really doubt you will be able to glue it back on without a structural pin bridging the break, there just is too much pressure for any epoxy I can think of.
What is different about the Elly PF from a "stock" NS pf? If it is the ear thickness, that can be adjusted with a proper machine shop as long as the Elley is smaller than the stock PF ears.

I posted a Flickr photostream of the PF for Richard Penney to take a look at, thinking that he might be willing to make me a naked Elli. As you can see, it actually took out part of the wall of the PF as well (the groove where the spring sits).
Richard's suggestion was to find a silversmith or artist who welds to build up new metal and file to shape if I can't find a new one.
As you can see, the ears are both thin and narrow, necessitating a fair amount of grinding/filing on a commercial PF. I can get a NS bottomless for about $60 and then get busy with the Dremel and hand files. Either a bottomless or an original replacement is pretty much called for, as the Ellimatic has little enough space between the group and the drip tray as it is. Even with the original PF, you can't fit a shot glass that's got any decent depth to it. I've actually got a second drip tray that's drilled with a drain fitting, and when I finally get the home espresso cart together, will have a drain hookup for it, as the drip tray is really tiny.
