Posted Sun Jun 10, 2012, 2:24am Subject: Changing the 3 hole tip on my V3 Rancilio Silvia?
I have a Rancilio Silvia V3. It's my first and only espresso machine and I have had it since 2008 I think.
I have tried and tried and tried to learn to create microfoam on it. And it's just not happening. I have read every guide out there and seen every YouTube video...
So I today accidentally came across an old post in here where people were complaining about the 3 hole tip Rancilio used to have on the V3 and yes, that's the one I have.
Would it make sense to try to change it? Or do I just suck at making microfoam?
How much difference does the 3 hole do? I have a constant feeling that there is not enough power in the steamer.
Is it my technique I should change?
And if I were to change the tip how do I go about that? I am in the EU.

Well, if you are having issues after all this time, you might try plugging one hole at a time with a toothpic to see if you have better luck with fewer holes. Toothpics are cheep and easy to get so see if this works better for you.

No - sorry. And I am mostly just confused now I think... Because I have tried just about anything and any tutorial out there, and the bloody thing never works like people describes...
Mostly I am able to get some level of microfoam but it is foam on the top and more liquid at the bottom. And I never seem to have enough steam power to get any... sorry whats the english word (english is not my native tonque...) Swirling? Or spinning? in the jug

I have been to a Barista class at a very good local coffee house. Had absolutely no problems at their machine, which was of course a professional machine. It would be very very pricy here. Would be way cheeper first to try a new tip, that is why I am hessitant to do it. I have thought of it.

When I had my Silvia v1, I upgraded it to the v3 wand that was for sale on chriscoffee.com. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the articulating wand CCS sells to upgrade older Silvia's is identical to the stock one coming on v3s. The 4 hole steam tip that came with it was just fine for me to make excellent microfoam. With you having been to a training course in a professional shop, I would suspect you know what you're looking for, so my thought now is...it's either your steam tip or your technique. If it's your technique, and you feel like your at the end of your ability to improve, it sounds like you either need to post a video or get someone to help you live. Your resaults with the toothpick piece(s) in place will be tell tale...so please report back.
