Water from the pump is forced around the tube into the heat exchanger, and the pressure pushes the hot water down out the tube.

Well it depends on how much you have invested in this machine. Oscar is a nice machine but though yours is older, it is a little higher up the "food chain". with lots of nice features that Oscar does not have.
It really depends on where the issue is in the main tube. If near one end, it should not be TOO hard to have repaired, if it is in the center of the tube, that is much tougher. Either way though, a weld shop would be able to tell you how much to repair.
We are both on the same page as to testing the rest of the machine. If it all works and a weld shop can fix your boiler for a couple hun, I would keep your machine but that is just my opinion and how I am, YMMV!

Yup--very official now. I put everything back together and hooked it up to water. I took out the heating element so I could see a majority of the heat exchanger. Sure enough, water sprayed out an inch long crack parallel with the tube, in the middle, pointing down towards the bottom of the boiler. Pretty sure it was stored in the garage with water in it which explains this crack and the sight glass crack.
SO I guess I need to find out if a joint like this can be removed, the pipe replaced, and re-sealed.
I'll have to find some caps/plugs to test the other elements--I need to plug it otherwise I can't even leave the water on since the city pressure trips both the pressure stat and the safety valve. If I turn the water off then I cannot test the pump.

]]I restored one of these about 2 yrs ago. Some shops can braze the cracks inside, but you would have to find a good shop. Any questions or issues, email me from my account email and send pics. I will help all I can. I have tons of pics where I tore mine down as well.

Restored one of those a few years ago. Mine was the Mac Digit (1997 Model). Almost identical, I tweaked my back everytime I worked on it. I ran across a good deal on an Expobar and I sold it shortly after. Any questions or diagrams, pm me and I can see what I got.
