Yes the case is in good shape for 5 years old. There is the normal scuffing of use on the cup tray, drip tray that you would expect but from a few feet away, it looks pretty darn good.
Bill, thanks for the wiring photo, yes I switched the wires on the "back" side of the boiler. It didn't seem to make much difference though with the lights as the boiler light still stays on (and I would expect the heater too) though I left it warm up for over half an hour, that should have been long enough for it to heat up to operating temp. Heck, my 2.5l boiler on my ECM hits steam at about 5 min though it takes a bit longer to equalize the machine.
On heat up, there was a hiss coming from the back side of the boiler at the bottom flange, this was expected as there is a large buildup of calcium around the bottom of the boiler etc.
It is cooling down now, unpluged now. When it is cool enough to handle, I will pull the boiler/gp head out and take the boiler apart. A good cleaning, a gasket and possibly a PID to take over the temp duties and I should be into this machine a total of about $200, not bad in the long run.
I back flushed the gp hd yesterday and the 3 way valve operates properly and does not leak. The gp gasket needs to be replaced as I would think it is probably the one that came on the machine new!
One thing that had me a little concerned on warm up was that I could not see a OP safety valve. I see the three thermostats, the water inlet, the steam outlet and the pressure regulator but no safety valve... well not one that looks like the one on my ECM anyway.

You were drinking what? What the boiler looked like upon cracking. The complaint was that there was some white stuff in the water. DUH, Use filtered water and descale your boiler!

After a quick cleaning in calcinet, the crud is gone. Gosh, it was still getting hot, do you think it is OK to keep using this heater? It still works?! I don't see why you might want to replace it!
