I recently acquired a San Marco from someone who didn't use it much.  It was built in 2004.

Unfortunately, UPS saw fit to drop it on the way out and I'm in a battle with them right now.  The UPS store actually packed the thing and UPS claims the UPS store is the "shipper," apparently with the rights to any damage payments, but that's another story.

The frame was bent and I have no idea what other damages were done, so I've disassembled the thing.  What the heck, I may as well get under the hood to see how the thing works.

After I get the frame back in shape, I was wondering what other mods I should do while I have it apart.  I wasn't really wanting an HX and didn't think about what that would mean, but there you go.  Should I PID?  What other mods would be best for this project?

San Marco makes a nice machine.  The small deep portafilter takes some getting used to.  I have an 85-16-m2 which is similar to your machine but a two group.  Get it working and enjoy it.  There is no reason to pid it because it is a heat exchnage the water running from the water supply is going to be stable whether it is pid or running off the pressurestat.

cizinec,
Gern is exactly right. There is no need to PID. Like Gern, I have owned a 85-16-m2 that is a 1994 model, ran it hard from 1996 until 2004 in an espresso bar, reconditioned it in early 2007, and it is still running strong for one of my customers today. They are bullet proof machines. Filter properly and you will have a machine that will last a lifetime. The portafilter handle is capable of holding up to 28 grams of espresso but you would need the deeper basket.
