Posted Sat Nov 4, 2006, 6:37pm Subject: PID'ing an HX machine -- any experience out there?
I just noticed that Chris' Coffee is offering through a 3rd party an optional PID for the Alexia and Vetrano. I can see why it would be nice for a single boiler, but I didn't originally see the benefit for an HX machine. After thinking about it, however, it might turn an HX machine into a poor man's double boiler and give extremely stable brewing temps.
So, anyone have any experience or comments they might share on PID'ing an HX machine? Michael
I installed a Watlow 935A PID on my Bunn ES-1A HX this weekend. Once I got all the parts and (especially the) information together it was an hour or two to complete the job. I haven't used it enough yet to tell you if the temperature is more stable but I can tell you it's a lot quieter without the pstat & tstats clicking on & off. For that reason alone I'd recommend the PID for HX machines.
If you can change a light bulb & read & follow directions it's an easy enough do-it-yourself project; besides it'd cost big $$$ to ship most HX machines by common carrier. I'm getting things ready to PID a Nuova Simonelli MAC 1-group next. The hardest job will be figuring out how to remove the exterior panels so I can have access to the interior parts. I could do the install by just removing the top panel (AKA cup warmer) but I figure this would be a good opportunity to take a look at the general condition of the machine.
