Subject: lever issue with La Pavoni Romantica-pro-PG16

Something strange going on.  I have had my Romantica for 13 years...I think it is a millenium in that the piston is plastic vs brass.  I'm not sure what could have happened but when I raise the lever as far as it will go, I get no water entering the group head.  The lever is correctly attached to the group with the higher pin closest to the tank.  I checked the piston and it has not unscrewed itself from the piston rod.

I solved the problem by unscrewing a bit the ball which sits atop the group head and thus raising it.....by doing this I increased the upper limit that the lever could go and now have water entering the group head. (I notice that some models, in lieu of the ball, have a domed nut in place of the ball which eliminates the problem since the lever fork passes up with the domed nut not blocking it as the ball does.  I could just operate this way but the issue is making me a little nuts...Any ideas?
