responsible for keeping water from dripping through the grouphead and portafilter.    During the warm-up and achieving operating pressure, water drips from the grouphead to the portafilter.    Cylinder sleeve O-ring seal?  Piston V gaskets?  Worn upper group sleeve?   All parts except group sleeve replaced last year.   Just trying to isolate the problem.  TIA.

The one that holds back the boiler pressure and prevents the group head from raining on your drip-tray is the upper of the two piston gaskets.  The upper one has the groove facing up and prevents water from passing the piston downward. The lower one has the groove facing down and prevens the piston from passing the water, therefore forcing the water down when you bring the lever down.  Replace them both, though.  And since you're pulling the piston out, you might as well replace the little clear one around the shaft as well, it's probably the same age and nearly as hard.

apart from cleaning issue

if the leak is in the piston/cylinder then yes as mention above  replace both p-53
if the leak is between the sleeve and the grouphead and you obviously have a millennium group then mp-3

Thanks for the responses.  I'm going to pull the group head screen off, turn the machine on and see if I can tell if the leak is coming from within the piston or outside of the piston.  I'm due for the annual gasket replacements.  Thanks again.

Just a follow-up:

Nylon cylinder sleeve had a hair line crack between the gasket and the thread going nearly half-way around.

Installed a new cylinder sleeve, new gasket and a single wrap of teflon tape around the threads.  Along with all new seals for the grouphead, it is now drip-free!
