finally done age of birth: 1976(its what i've been told) turned some handles on the lathe, did the lever a little longer so i dont have to force it down. ran out of that mahaganny(sorry for spelling wrong) wood to do the rest of the handles. i will probably change them to put brass handles, just because i love shiny brass :)

I have the millenium La Pavoni PPG. That one has rosewood handles and knobs. The prices on the rosewood parts are ridiculous, but you could possibly get the threaded inserts so you can turn your own knobs. I'm a big fan of brass, but I would be concerned with overheating on the portafilter handle and such. I like your long lever handle concept. I could use a counterweight set-up so it is not a two handed wrestling match to balance out the machine while pulling the lever or mounting the portafilter. I guess I could just anchor the unit to the countertop.

Better stop before you jump into the brass handles. It would be no problem with the lever handle, but you will probably burn your hand on the portafilter. Too much heat will be conducted by all the metal parts which contact each other....
