Is it ok to clean a La Pavoni with detergent (clean express) espresso cleaner?

Recently acquired - 10 yrs old but NEVER used from a friend.

Can I just put a cpl of tsp of detergent into la pavoni and run it thru several times? should I put some in and wait overnite? should I use a different method?

tips appreciated !

thanks

ps..is it "normal" for the water to stop coming thru the grouphead as soon as you start lowering the lever? it does not run water thru the whole pull??

Um, no, I wouldn't use a detergent, too foamy... use citric acid descaler, there shouldn't be anything in the boiler besides water, and maybe scale (but not if it's never been used - shouldn't have scale in that case!).   Citric acid will freshen everything up.   As far as the water stopping on the down stroke, the machine behaves differently with portafilter & coffee in the PF, than it does just moving the lever up/down without a PF & coffee in the basket.  You'll need to pack a PF with coffee, and see what happens then.

Put a teaspoonful of baking soda dissolved in water in the machine, let it heat up, run some through the group and then discard once it has cooled down, then rinse with fresh water., That will freshen it up and remove any off tastes.

Thanks! Will do...

By the way - is there a simple (or any) way to remove and clean the splash screen inside the grouphead on the la pavonis? I did not see a screw holding the screen in like my other machines...

After 10 years it's likely you'll be replacing the group head O ring.
