Subject: ESE pods on La Pavoni Europiccola?

Hi, All,

My father-in-law dug out a 40 year old EPC-8 which had been stored under his bar for most of those years, but it looks identical to the current version (though it doesn't appear to indicate when it's hot other than that steam starts coming out the safety valve). They are unwilling to devote the counter space to a proper grinder, however, nor are they likely to invest in the care and learning required to properly tamp, so I believe ESE pods would be the best possible compromise. The machine has a 49mm filter basket rather than the standard 58mm. Can I use pods in this (perhaps cutting around the paper rim)? Thanks!

Bill

My concern would be more about whether a 40 year old machine needs some sort of maintenance prior to trying it out.  I would carefully explore that issue first.

Given that the pod is 45mm in diameter, it might work.  This will really depend on the shape of the basket.  The paper rim isn't such an issue and trimming it probably isn't necessary.  Of the pods I've tried, the individually wrapped illy pod seem to have the smallest paper rim.  Once you know the machine is safe to use, the $12 for a box of pods really isn't such a risk.
